Frequently Asked QuestionsBlue Q.png

Do I require a referral from my family dentist to see an orthodontist?

No, you do not require a referral from your family dentist. Many of our patients come to see us because of a recommendation from family and friends who have already seen Dr. Bales for treatment. Please feel free to contact us at (204) 72-SMILE (727-6453). We will be happy to arrange a time to see you.

At what age should I schedule an appointment for an orthodontic screening?

If you or your family dentist have no immediate concerns, it is not necessary to visit the orthodontist before the age of seven. Between the ages of seven and twelve there is a transition occurring from the primary (baby) teeth to the permanent (adult) teeth. During this time, some potential problems can be improved by limited, interceptive treatment. Most comprehensive orthodontic treatment will occur, if necessary, once all the primary teeth have fallen out.

What are the advantages of interceptive treatment?

  • creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  • creating facial symmetry by influencing jaw growth
  • reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • preserving space for erupting teeth
  • reducing the need for tooth removal
  • reducing treatment time with braces

How do I schedule an appointment for my first examination?

You can schedule an appointment by calling Deidre at 72-SMILE (727-6453). She will be happy to arrange a time for you to come and see us.

Staples Q.pngWhat will happen at the first appointment?

At the initial examination appointment, Dr. Bales will provide you with a preliminary diagnosis of your orthodontic problems and treatment possibilities. If appropriate, we will take orthodontic records to determine the best treatment options for you.

How long will treatment take?

Treatment time will vary from person to person depending on the severity of your problems. Teeth move into the places they ought to be at different rates for different people. Generally the Damon System of braces that we use is 6 months faster than traditional braces. And shorter treatment time means fewer appointments and a beautiful smile faster.

It also depends how much you cooperate and listen to Dr. Bales' instructions. Patients who do not follow these instructions, who do not use elastics as instructed, who do not take care of their braces and who do not clean their teeth properly will have longer treatment time.

How soon will I see results?

With the Damon System most people start seeing results in as little as ten weeks. But every patient is different, so ask Dr, Bales for his expectations.

Do braces hurt?

Orthodontic treatment can be uncomfortable because the teeth are moving into the proper place. We use the latest 'high-tech' braces and 'space-age' wires that use gentle force to create tooth movement. Your teeth, cheeks, lips and tongue will become accustomed to your braces in no time. We also encourage you to tell us about your concerns so we can provide you with help or tips to ease your treatment. Many people experience little or no discomfort in treatment.

Won't my teeth straighten out as I get older?

When your upper and lower jaws grow, the growth occurs behind your teeth. Because of this, you will not develop more space for your teeth as your jaws grow.

Why should I have them straightened?

Boy Braces.jpgFacing the world with a terrific smile is one of the main reasons kids and adults want to have their teeth straightened. There are other reasons, as well. As important as your smile is, it is just as important that food particles are not trapped between your teeth causing tooth decay and gum disease. Food is difficult to remove when teeth are poorly aligned. Teeth can also chip or wear easily if they do not fit together properly. Your teeth are the first step in the digestive process which provides your body the nutrition it requires for overall health.

How much does it cost?

Each person's treatment is specific to their needs. After the initial examination, we will be pleased to discuss the professional fees for your treatment and review our flexible payment options. We will also assist you with the insurance application process should you have orthodontic coverage.

Why should I see an Orthodontic Specialist?

A certified specialist in orthodontics is an expert at moving teeth, helping jaws develop properly and presenting a plan that will give you a great smile and a functioning bite. Teeth are changed by orthodontics and sometimes the structure of the face is affected by treatment as well, therefore, it is important that the treatment be done by an expert in the field.xray.jpg

Do you have "Invisible Braces"?

"Invisible Braces" or Invisalign™(www.invisalign.com), are computer generated appliances that take the place of traditional braces. The invisible braces are ideal for those who need a minimal amount of tooth movement. At your consultation, Dr. Bales will be able to let you know if you are a candidate for Invisalign™.

Can adults have braces?

15.jpgYes, adults deserve to have a great, confident smile and a well functioning bite. If you do not like to smile because of the way your teeth look or if you are concerned with how your bite feels, please call 72-SMILE (727-6453) and we will be happy to schedule an appointment to discuss your options with you.

Will you be cleaning my teeth during braces?

This is a service that your hygienist will continue to perform for you during orthodontic treatment. It is important that you keep your regularly scheduled appointments with your dentist. For our adult patients, or patients who need extra help with their cleanings, we encourage more frequent cleanings. Sometimes a gum specialist (periodontist) may be asked to assist with an evaluation of your gums prior to commencing orthodontic treatment.
